(must reside within 50 miles of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Newark,

with Los Angeles or San Francisco / Oakland strongly preferred)

We are a local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), representing nearly 41,000 resident physicians who are dedicated to improving residency training and education, advancing patient care, and expanding healthcare access for our communities. CIR’s mission is to empower our nation’s physicians to fight for excellence for our patients. 

Job Summary
The Committee of Interns and Residents is looking to fill a New Organizer position. CIR is committed to the growth of the organization through strategic organizing campaigns. To accomplish this, we need a highly driven and committed individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills, and who can effectively solve problems. This position has the responsibility of successfully managing all aspects of an organizing campaign. 

What You’ll Do

  • Conduct broad and intensive outreach 
  • Build one-on-one relationships, and identify, recruit and develop leaders
  • Conduct individual and group meetings to move organizing campaigns forward
  • Engage, motivate and mobilize unorganized physicians to take action
  • Manage expectations, fears, and hopes of physicians throughout the campaign.
  • Plan and implement actions and events to support organizing efforts
  • Comprehend resident work life, training, governance structures, terminology, and role within hospital operations.
  • Collaborate with other CIR departments (Communications, Political, Legal, Research, Contract) to strengthen and guide campaigns.
  • Be well versed in labor law specifically related to regulations governing union recognition.
  • Perform basic campaign research, including probing, list building and worksite mapping
  • Facilitate meetings effectively.
  • Engage with unorganized physicians directly on issues related to quality improvement, health disparities and better working conditions
  • Develop skills in public speaking, health care economics, strategic research, and campaign execution

What Makes a Great Candidate 

  • At least two years of experience as a union organizer required 
  • Healthcare experience preferred, but not required
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong ability to connect and communicate with people of diverse backgrounds in pursuit of a common goal
  • Ability to think critically to manage conflict and adversarial situations
  • Ability to work independently and possess a strong work ethic 
  • Ability to quickly incorporate feedback and direction from your supervisor
  • Must be able to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment 
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Flexible working outside normal business hours, ability to work in the evenings/weekends as needed 
  • Ability to travel for out of state assignments frequently and for extended periods of time
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite
  • Proficiency with Google products such as Gmail and Google Drive (docs & sheets) 
  • Recognizable interest in the work and the membership and a desire to advance the organization.
  • Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and handle fast-paced settings, multiple projects and tight deadlines.
  • Able to critically evaluate one’s own performance, incorporating feedback into improving performance.
  • Effective and appropriate communication with potential members, staff, administrators, and supervisors.
  • Must reside within 50 miles of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Newark, New York City, Philadelphia, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco/Oakland, Seattle or Washington, D.C. with Los Angeles or San Francisco/Oakland strongly preferred.
  • Proof of up-to-date COVID vaccination in accordance with CDC guidelines is a condition of employment. 

CIR Offers 
Competitive salary ($82,231 – $130,782) commensurate with experience and in compliance with the staff collective bargaining agreement. Excellent benefits package including health, dental, and vision coverage with no employee contributions; generous paid leave time including four weeks’ vacation within the first calendar year of employment, paid holidays, personal days, and sick days; short and long-term disability insurance; 401(k); defined benefit pension plan; and mileage reimbursement.
